The Moderate Washingtonian

Outlook on politics and elections in the state of Washington from an overall centrist viewpoint. My views tend to be libertarian in nature, but at the same time are largely nonpartisan.

Rep. Rodney Tom a newly-minted Democrat

The GOP has lost another of its pre-Reagan breed today with the party switch of state Rep. Rodney Tom to the Democratic Party. The switch came coupled with his announcement of a campaign against conservative state Sen. Luke Esser, a campaign which will hopefully provide dividends for Tom.

Rodney Tom has been one of my favourite legislators since he was elected, he is an asset to moderate and libertarian citizens statewide, and I wish him the best of luck in his campaign for the Senate.

I kinda feel bad for Debi Golden - her campaign's been kinda blind-sided. I think we'll see a very robust and hotly-contested Primary - and frankly I think either candidate from the D's can beat the too-conservative-for-his-district Esser.

Agreed. In my opinion, Tom would probably have an easier time than Golden, but the 48th has changed a ton since Esser was first elected and he is definitely out of the mainstream now. Hell, if a liberal Republican like Tom could had trouble with his reelection bid, what could possess voters to reelect a right-winger like Esser?
